WHAT'S NEW IN SEPTEMBER?

Hours:

Mon. - Thu. - 9 am - 8 pm

LABOR DAY CLOSING

The library will be closed Monday, Sep. 3, for Labor Day.  Our fall Sunday hours will resume on Sep. 9 (1 - 4 pm).

FRIENDS OF THE MARY L. COOK PUBLIC LIBRARY GENERAL MEETING

Tuesday, September 18 @ 6:00 pm.

The Friends support all programs at the library (adult, teen, and juvenile).

Friends provide monies to purchase the prizes to support various reading programs.

Friends provide monies to maintain gardens at the library and the park.

Friends hold an annual Book Sale.

Friends hold an annual Holiday Auction.

Friends believe that strong libraries make good communities.

MARY L. COOK PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFERS FREE ACCESS TO ONLINE EDUCATIONAL COURSES

Mary L. Cook Public Library is now offering cardholders free access to online educational courses from Lynda.com.  Now owned by LinkedIn, Lynda.com has been the leading provider of online learning content for 20 years. The service has more than 12,000 courses, ranging from computer programming to project management including instruction on various computer software, programming languages, and business topics. The video courses are taught by industry experts and are designed for any skill level. Lynda.com also offers more than 50 different learning paths to help users stay ahead in their current job or change careers.

It's free to patrons, so if you have an account with us all you need is your library card number and PIN. You can access Lynda.com inside or outside the library, from any device with an internet connection.

Lynda.com courses are available for dozens of popular software and developer tools, including:

•             Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.)

•             Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, etc.)

•             Latest versions of popular operating systems such as Windows 10, iOS, Android, LinuxCoding and markup languages such as C, Java, Python, Ruby, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and PHP.

In addition, Lynda.com offers courses on business topics and personal advancement, such as:

•             Job hunting and résumé or cover letter writing

•             Business skills, communication, marketing and leadership

•             Data analysis, cloud computing, and server management

PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH 5TH GRADERS...POP OPEN A GOOD BOOK

Check out five books during the month of September and you’ll receive a chance for a hot prize.

SEPTEMBER IS PET MONTH AT THE MARY L. COOK PUBLIC LIBRARY

Stop in today and complete a pet match.  Can you match the pet with the library staff member?  The guessing continues all month.

DROP IN STORYTIMES

Aimed at 3 yrs. - 6 yrs. but all ages accepted. Drop in Monday evenings 6:15 pm - 6:35 pm or Tuesday mornings 10:00 am - 10:20 am.  Join us in the children’s room for a few stories, fingerplays, and laughs.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES

For 3 - 5 year olds, including kindergartners, Thursdays 10:30 - 11:15 am Or Thursdays 6:45 - 7:30 pm, beginning Thursday, September 20.  Registration requested and began the end of August. We play games, sing songs, hear stories, and share laughs. 

STORYTIME SUPERSTARS

Come to storytime at the Mary L. Cook Public Library and get a stamp.  When you have 10 stamps on your Storytime Superstar card you will earn a free book.  We will keep your Storytime Superstar card here at the library.

 TODDLER LAPTIMES

For 2 years old & their caregivers, Tuesdays 6:45 - 7:10 pm. October 2 thru November 6.  Join us for stories, games and many laughs.  Required registration in person begins September 17. Limit - 12 toddlers and 12 caregivers.

BABY BOOKWORMS

For Birth to two years & a caregiver.  Watch for details this fall for when these sessions will resume.

CHAPTERS BOOK CLUB

For those in grades 1 and 2.  This group will read one short chapter book a month, then we meet to discuss the book, the author, and do activities associated with the book.  The Chapters Book Club will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, September 19, from 4:00 pm – 4:45 pm (Special date for September only).  Registration is required and is available now.  Books should be available the beginning of September.

RAPID READERS & WRITERS

Calling all Book Worms (grades 3 – 5) to join the Rapid Readers & wRiters, Tuesday, September 25, from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Please join us as we discuss books, play games, try out a bit of creative writing, and enjoy a light snack. Registration is required and is available now.  Books should be available to pick up the beginning of September. For more information, contact Miss Kathy @ 513-897-4826.

LOOK WHO'S READING

Grade K book club will meet Tuesday, September 25, from 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm. The group will engage in a variety of fun learning activities featuring phonics, the writing of letters and words, and many other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation. Registration is required and is available now.  Books will be available to pick up the beginning of September.

"SCARY' FAMILY STORYTIME & FORT BUILDING

Friday, October 5 from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Bring the whole family for an after-hours storytime*, snack and fort building in the library.  Families should bring blankets, pillows, and a flashlight.

Registration is required for this program and will begin Monday, September 24. Stop in the library or call to register.  *Stories will gradually get scarier, but families will have the opportunity to leave the room and complete other activities.

 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN

In August 2014, the Mary L. Cook Public Library launched a new literacy program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.  We have 25 readers who have completed the goal of 1000 books.

If you read your child one book a day, she/he will reach 1000 books in under three years.  Though the goal of this program is to improve literacy skills, but even more, it’s about time spent together reading.

Stop in today and ask us how to register your child for this program.

TEACHERS - PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND HOME SCHOOL

We know how important and how special teachers are!  So there are several services that are offered to teachers and teachers only, to help you help your students.

Teachers may borrow materials for an extended loan period.  

Books and audio materials for six weeks. DVDs for one week free of charge.

***Book Collections

Teachers may request that a book collection be chosen for their students’ use. We will put the collection together for you all you need to do is pick it up!

***Library and Classroom Visits

Teachers and their students are welcome to visit the Library!

The Youth Services Coordinator and the Teen and Young Adult Coordinator are also available to visit your classroom!

ADULT PROGRAMS

ROOTFINDERS RETURN

Now is the perfect time to join our genealogy group. Find out how to do research and uncover a new branch in your family tree.  The group will meet on Saturday, Sep. 8 at 10 am to get to know everyone. 

DRAWING II CLASSES

This six-week series of classes is for those who have completed Drawing I.  Mary Sroka-Calvert will hold class on Monday evenings from 6 - 8 pm from Sep. 10 - Oct. 15.  Registration begins Monday, Aug. 27 (adults and ages 12 and up; limited to 12 participants).

DRAWING IV CLASSES

If you have completed Drawing III, you may register beginning Monday, Aug. 27 for Drawing IV classes. They will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 - 8 pm from Sep. 11 - Oct. 16.  Limited to 12 participants, (ages 12 and up).

WATERCOLOR PAINTING CLASS

This class taught by Pam Campbell resumes meeting on Mondays from 9 am to 12 pm starting Monday, September 10. This class is currently full, but you can put your name on a waiting list at our front desk.

ADULT BOOK CLUB

Starting Sep. 11, the adult book club will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 1 pm.  The book for Sep. 11 is The Opposite of Maybe by Maddie Dawson.  Books are available at the front desk.  The next meeting will be on Sep. 25.

CARRIAGE HILL RESIDENTS

We will meet in your community room on Friday, Sep. 14 at 2 pm to make a sun catcher.  Hope to see you there!

MANDALA PAINTING

Adults (ages 16 & up), paint a round mandala on Friday, Sep. 14 at 6:30 pm.  Register beginning Monday, Aug. 27. Class is free and no experience is necessary.

KNITTERS

Meet Thursdays at 5 pm. 

TEEN PROGRAMS

OREO TASTE TEST CHALLENGE (grades 6 & up): Monday, September 17, from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Guess the flavor of the Oreos!  See how many you can get correct. Registration is required and will begin Tuesday, September 4.  Stop in the library or call to register.
