WHAT'S BLOOMING?

Have you ever wondered what to do with your perennials after the killing frost has zapped them?  Schools of thought vary.  Some say to allow the dead plant tops to overwinter on top of the soil to help insulate the plant roots.  Some say to cut the plant off just above soil level to prevent the litter from harboring pests over the cold season.  Plants like Echinacea, with seeds heads that provide forage for winter birds, show us there’s an obvious benefit to wildlife if we leave the flower tops alone until spring.  Other plants, like leafy Hosta, make a mushy and unsightly mess that makes an excellent place for unwanted garden invaders to stay safe.  Cleaning up this type of mess before winter sets in can help ease spring garden chores.  A light layer of mulch can help to insulate roots from extreme soil temperature fluctuations.  Mary L. Cook Library invites you to take frequent walks around these demonstration gardens.  The scenery is always changing.

Read 20 books, get a sticker.  Read 100 books, get a free book!  The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn.
