WHAT'S BLOOMING?
You might have noticed the shady hosta garden on the south end of the library close to the drive through drop box. We haven’t featured the hostas in a newsletter, mainly because hostas aren’t normally noted for showy and gorgeous flower spikes. If it’s fragrance you’re interested in, then Hosta plantaginea will not disappoint. Commonly called August lily, this one produces late summer into early fall flower spikes featuring larger than average, stark white, lily-shaped blooms that heavily perfume the air with orange blossom-like fragrance. Like Hosta plantaginea, the literally thousands of other varieties also entice beneficial pollinators, especially those sweet little hummingbirds. And with all those hosta choices, it’s possible to plan your hosta garden with blooms from May all the way through September!

BABY BOOKWORMS
Baby Storytime is for children from birth to 24 months and their parent or caregiver. Wednesdays 10:30am –11:00am *Begins October 18, 2017. Enjoy great books for babies, learn fun songs and rhymes, and meet other families in your neighborhood. Parents/caregivers are expected to stay with children during all sessions. CHAPTERS BOOK CLUB
A book club for those in grades 1 and 2. This group will read one short chapter book a month, and then meet to discuss the book, author, and do activities associated with the book. The October Chapters book club will meet on Tuesday, October 17 from 4:00 – 4:45 pm. Registration required - at this time, this group is full.
RAPID READERS AND WRITERS
Calling all Book Worms (grades 3 – 5) to join the Rapid Readers & wRiters at The Mary L. Cook Public Library Tuesday, October 24 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. LOOK WHO'S S READING BOOK CLUB (GRADE K)
Tuesday, October 24 from 6:00 – 6:30 pm. The group will engage in a variety of fun learning activities featuring phonics, the writing of letters and words, and many other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation. LEGO FUN FOR GRADES 1 – 5.
Choose one day to join us: Monday, October 30 from 6:00 – 6:45 pm or bring the family on Saturday, November 4 from 10:30 – 11:15 am. We supply Legos of all sizes and a theme. You supply your imagination. Come build a creation based on a theme. Please register beginning October 16. This program is limited to 20.
DINOSAUR SCIENCE FOR PRESCHOOLERS
(3yrs. – Kindergarteners) and a caregiver on Friday, November 3 from 4:00 - 4:30 pm. We will be learning about the dinosaurs of long ago with several hands on activities. DONUTS WITH DAD
Saturday, November 11 from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Hey kids, bring Dad or that special person in your life to the library for a morning of fun. We’ll provide donuts, drinks, and provide fun activities for all. This is a come-and-go program and there is no need to be there the full hour. So, stop in for a few minutes for a snack and complete an activity or two.

CANDY SCIENCE FOR GRADES 1 - 5

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
Have you signed your child up for this program yet? The 1,000 Books before Kindergarten encourages families to read at least 1,000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school. Families can sign up today at the Mary L. Cook Public Library. Each child will receive a folder with a page to record the books they read. Each time a goal of recording 20 books is reached, children are encouraged to bring their folder to the library to receive a sticker. Each time the goal of recording 100 books is reached, children should bring their folder to library to receive a free book and, pick up more library books.
The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s success when they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increase their exposure to a wide variety of books, and to promote use of the library – a gold mine of free material available to our community members.

ALTERED BOOK PURSE
Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6 pm. Make a clutch from a Reader's Digest Condensed Book. We supply the books and fabric, you supply any embellishments you would like to add such as lace, ribbons, or buttons. Also bring a pair of scissors. Sign up at the front desk. Limited to 12.
