100 YEARS AND GOING STRONG - LIBRARY ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE
Honor us with your presence at an open house commemorating the library's 100 years of service to our community on Sunday, Apr.23 from 1 - 4 pm. It's a jam-packed day full of fun and memories. View our documentary, "The Heart of our Community: The Story of the Mary L. Cook Library", by local film student and library employee Hannah Blair. Additonal library history will also be on display. Enjoy music from the duo "Raggedy Edge" who will present music from the different eras of our library's existence. There's face painting for the kids and a photo booth with Dr. Mary. Light refreshments will be served. It's a once in a century opportunity you don't want to miss!
ANNUAL BOOK SALE
Come to the world's greatest book sale (at least we think so)! Children, youth, and adult books, music CDs, DVDs and more will be for sale at our Friends of the Library Book Sale. Book Sale Hours:
Thursday, Apr. 20: Friends Preview Night 5 - 8 pm (memberships available at the door);
Friday, Apr. 21: 9 am - 5 pm - public;
Saturday, Apr. 22: 10 am - 2 pm - public;

Donations are being accepted now through Thursday, Apr. 20 at 4 pm. We cannot accept donations of encyclopedias or textbooks. If you have an hour or two to spare, sign up today to work the sale.
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION MOVIE SERIES: LIBRARIANS IN LIGHTS!
It's our last classic movie featuring librarians in celebration of our 100th anniversary year. On Monday, Apr. 3 at 1 pm, we'll be showing "The Music Man" with Robert Preston in the starring role and Shirley Jones as Marian the librarian.
ADULT DRAWING CLASSES
Drawing II classes continue on Wednesdays at 6 pm through Apr. 26, while Drawing III classes will be held on Mondays at 6 pm through Apr. 17.
CARRIAGE HILL CRAFT
We will be making a suncatcher on Friday, Apr. 7 at 2 pm in your community room. The program is free and supplies are included. Call Sheila at 897-4826 with questions.
SUMMER MESH WREATH
If you have already signed up for this craft (both classes are full), you will get to make a summer mesh wreath on Friday, Apr. 7 at 11:00 am or 6:30 pm. There is no experience necessary and supplies are included; however, if you own a glue gun, please bring it to the program.
SEMINAR ON ID THEFT
Dave Wiedmeyer will present a free seminar on preventing identity theft. Come in Saturday, Apr. 8 at 10 am for this timely information.
FINANCIAL PLANNING SEMINAR
Representatives from Beacon Hill Financial will present a free financial planning seminar on Thursday, Apr. 27 at 2 pm.
WATERCOLOR CLASSES
Watercolor classes continue through April on Mondays at 9 am. The class will not meet at the library on Apr. 17 or 24 due to the book sale.
ROOTFINDERS
Don't be a wallflower. Do-si-do on in to Rootfinders on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 10 am when Glenda Warman will present a program on folk songs.
ADULT BOOK CLUB
The adult book club meets every other Tuesday at 1 pm. Apr. 11 - Holmes on the Range by S. Hockensmith; Apr. 25 - Circling the Sun by P. McLain. Books will be available at the front desk.
ZENTANGLE
Zentangle art classes will be held Tuesday, May 2 at 6 pm or Wednesday, May 3 at 9:30 am. There is a $5 supply fee for each class. Sign up at the front desk.
KNITTING
Knitters of all levels are welcome to meet with our group each Thursday at 5 pm.
WHAT'S BLOOMING?
We’re sure you’ve noticed that some perennials and bulbs have been waking up quite early this spring thanks to the unusually warm late winter. Some folks have expressed their concerns regarding plant health and vigor as a result of the more recent cold temperatures that have followed the early spring awakening. Well, we’re here to assure you that with a few exceptions, most of your spring bulbs and perennials will be just fine. The shoots and unopened buds of the spring flowering bulbs are more protected than the leaves. If they have already begun flowering, they could sustain more damage than the plants that have sent up only leaves at this point. New growth on perennials in the landscape is less likely to be damaged if it’s closer to the ground where temperatures tend to be a bit warmer than the surrounding air. As the growing season progresses and temperatures begin to level off, you’ll be able to tell if there is permanent damage to your bulbs and perennials. Give it time and you may be surprised to see how hardy some plants can be! The Mary L. Cook Library and Warren County Master Gardeners invite you to take frequent walks around these demonstration gardens. The scenery is always changing, and we’re available to answer any questions you might have.

FIX IT BUILD IT
On Friday, Apr. 28 from 4 - 4:30 pm, preschoolers (3 yrs. - K) with a caregiver can come to explore how things are made and fixed. Required registration begins Apr. 10.
PINTEREST PARTY: PRESCHOOL - GRADE 5 AND CAREGIVERS
You are invited to a Pinterest Party on Friday, May 12 from 4 - 5 pm at the library. Join us as we create some of our favorite spring craft pins. Required signups begin Apr. 24.
LEGO FUN FOR GRADES 1 - 5
The Lego sessions will be Saturday, Apr. 29 from 10:30 -11:30 am or Monday, May 1 from 6 - 6:45 pm. We supply Legos of all sizes; you supply your imagination. Come build a creation based on a theme. Registration begins Apr. 10. This program is limited to 20.
1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages families to read at least 1,000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school. Families can sign up today. Each child will receive a folder to record their books. Earn a sticker for 20 books, and a free book of your very own after you read 100 books.
PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH GRADE 5
"I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream and Books” at the Mary L. Cook Public Library. During the month of April, if your child checks out 5 books we will give them a chance to win a great spring prize!
BABY BOOKWORMS
This baby storytime is for children from birth to 24 months and their caregiver on Wednesdays from 10:30 –11:00 am. No registration is required. Parents/caregivers are expected to stay with children during all storytime sessions. Enjoy great books for babies, learn fun songs and rhymes, and meet other families in your neighborhood. Our last session will be April 26. We will resume these sessions in the fall.
PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES
Preschool Storytimes are for 3 - 5 year olds including kindergartners, Thursdays 10:30 - 11:15 am or Thursdays 6:45 - 7:30 pm. Come every Thursday until the beginning of May for stories, games, songs, and crafts. Please note our last storytime until fall will be held May 4.
STORYTIME SUPERSTARS
Come to storytime at the Mary L. Cook Public Library and get a stamp. When you have 10 stamps on your Storytime Superstar card, you will earn a free book. We will keep your Storytime Superstar card here at the library.
CHAPTERS BOOK CLUB
Chapters Book Club is for those in grades 1 and 2. This group reads one short chapter book a month, and then meets to discuss the book, the author, and do activities. This club meets Tuesday, Apr. 11 from 4:00 – 4:45 pm. Registration is required (presently full).
RAPID READERS AND WRITERS
Calling all bookworms (grades 3 – 5) for the Rapid Readers & Writers on Tuesday, Apr. 18 from 4:00-5:00 pm. We discuss books, play games, try out creative writing, and enjoy a light snack. Registration is required (presently full).
LOOK WHO'S READING BOOK CLUB
The Look Who’s Reading Book Club (grade K) will meet Tuesday, Apr. 18 from 6:00 – 6:30 pm. The group engages in fun learning activities featuring phonics, letter and word writing, and other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation (presently full).
TEEN CAFE
Teens (grades 6 & up), join the fun and bring a friend each Wednesday after school from 3:00-4:00 pm. Each week is something different – snacks, plus movies, games, or crafts. There is no Teen Cafe on Apr. 19. Our last session will be May 3. For questions, call Sheila at 513-897-4826.
TEENS, BE A BOOK BUDDY THIS SUMMER
If you are in grades 7-12 and like working with children, we have the program for you! “Book Buddies” pairs older students with younger children for a fantastic reading experience. Be a Book Buddy this summer. You will help children select books, become a reading mentor and encourage children to love books and reading. You will earn community service hours. These Book Buddy sessions will be scheduled on Monday evenings at 6:45 - 7:15 pm from June 5 - June 26. All teens are to arrive at 6:30 pm to prepare for sessions. If you are interested in becoming a Book Buddy, please contact Kathy Daniels, danielka@marylcook.com for an application. No more than 15 students will become Book Buddies. If you have never served as a Book Buddy, you will need to attend a mandatory training session May 15, 2017 from 3:00- 3:30 pm at the Mary L. Cook Public Library.
