100 YEARS YOUNG AND STILL GROWING!

With almost 100 years rooted in the Waynesville community, the Mary L. Cook Public Library is branching out.

We are pleased to announce that we have added a branch at the Waynesville Elementary Media Center in the elementary school building. In collaboration with Wayne Local Schools, over the summer we weeded the entire collection at the school, wrapped and repaired the damaged books, and purchased scores of new books. It was a huge undertaking, especially since it took place during our record-breaking Summer Reading Program.

We now provide the software to handle circulation at the school. We send a helper, also known as Miss Kathleen, armed with an iPad and a wireless HotSpot to assist Waynesville Elementary library paraprofessional, Kelley Purkey. Now we can serve all of those students who might not make it to the Mary L. Cook Public Library with a vibrant, updated collection right at the elementary school.

We are so excited about this collaboration with Wayne Local Schools. Thank you so much to Pat Dubbs, Ron James, Tammy Burchfield, Kelley Purkey, Debbie Benton, the entire Mary L. Cook Library staff, and everyone else involved in this project!

TRAVELING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

Going over the river and through the woods?  Don't forget to pack Mary L. Cook!  Download our MLC app from Google Play (Androids) or the iTunes store (Apple) for easy access to Overdrve, Hoopla, and Flipster for digital books, movies, audiobooks, and magazines - great traveling companions for big and little passengers!

FOOD FOR FINES TIME!

NOW is the time to help your neighbors while you help yourself! From Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, you may remove up to $10 in fines per card with a food pantry donation of the same amount.  Nonperishable food items in non-glass containers are gladly accepted, as well as personal toiletries and cleaning supplies.  Stop in the library for more information on what type of items are always in need.  Please check food expiration dates before donating.  Make sure to let the front desk personnel know about your donation so that credit can be applied.  The food pantry is located in Waynesville, so your donations help people in our community.

MAGNIFIER AVAILABLE IN THE LIBRARY

Thanks to a donation from a local patron, the library has a desk-sized magnifier available to use in our magazine room.  The magnifier is great for placing newspapers, crossword puzzles, etc. on a lighted surface so that materials are easier to read.  This marvelous low-vision aide is available for you to stop in and try out now.

1,00O BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN

This fun and exciting reading program is for children ages 0-5 years. This program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of reading to very young children as well as encouraging parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages families to read at least 1,000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school. Families can sign up today at the Mary L. Cook Public Library. Each child will receive a folder with a page to record the books they read. Each time a goal of recording 20 books is reached, children are encouraged to bring their folder to the library to receive a sticker.  Each time the goal of recording 100 books is reached, children should bring their folder to library to receive a free book and pick up more library books.  The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s success when they begin school.
