SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Mary L. Cook Public Library was a very busy place this summer. We had record number of juveniles, teens, and families participating in our summer reading programs! We had over 600 juveniles registered for our program, all in hopes of trying to win a shiny new bicycle (donated by retired realtor Gil Irvin), Kings Island passes, as well as 17 other prizes (Olaf sno-cone machine, cash, Lego sets, and more). Our teens were reading in hopes of winning cash and gift certificates. The families in Waynesville are READERS!
o Thank you, to COSI, and Newport aquarium for providing gift certificates that allowed families that read together to play together!
o Thank you, Friends of the Library, for providing the out-of-this-world reader T-shirts for the juvenile readers of 20 books or 12 hours this summer! Thank you, Gil Irvin, for the wonderful bicycle that was an incentive for many of the juveniles to reach their goal of 20 books/10 hours!
o Thank you to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery for donating a family pass to the museum.
o Thank you, King’s Island, for the passes that encouraged our readers.
o Thank you, Countryside YMCA, for donating 1 session of swim lessons and 1 session of gymnastics.
o Thank you, John and Becky Barney for donating $125.00 that was a huge incentive for many teens to read, read, read this summer!

PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH 5TH GRADERS...
During the month of August, we are having “Whoo’s reading?” Check out 5 books and receive a chance to choose a wise reward.
DROP IN STORYTIMES
Aimed at 3 yrs. - 6 yrs., but all ages accepted. Drop in Monday evenings 6:15 - 6:35 pm or Tuesday mornings 10:00 - 10:20 am. Join us in the children’s room for a few stories, fingerplays, and laughs.
CAN YOU CRACK THE CODE?
Tuesday, September 10 @ 6:30 - 7:15 pm. Escape room for Kindergarten and 1st grade. We will race against the clock to solve puzzles, crack codes, and unlock boxes to save the day. Registration is required and limited to 16. Sign up beginning August 26 to reserve a spot.
PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES
For 3 - 5 year olds, including kindergartners on Thursdays 10:30 - 11:15 am or Thursdays 6:45 - 7:30 pm beginning Thursday, September 19. Registration is requested and begins the end of August. We play games, sing songs, hear stories, and share laughs. Special Storytimes include Halloween Parties, Easter Egg Hunts, and more; watch for details.
NEW TODDLER TIME
For ages 24 months - 36 months & their caregivers on Tuesdays from 11 - 11:30 am. Join us for this new program of activities and fun for your little ones! We will read a story of two and do fun activities each program. These sessions involve parents as active participants. This program involves messy fun; dress accordingly. We will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Required registration begins September 16. Limit - 12 toddlers & 12 caregivers.
BABY BOOKWORMS
For birth to two years & a caregiver. Watch for details this fall for when these sessions will resume.
CHAPTERS BOOK CLUB
Grades 1 and 2. This group will read one short chapter book a month, and then meet to discuss the book, the author, and do activities associated with the book. The Chapters book club will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, September 17 from 4:00 - 4:45 pm. Registration is required and will be available end of August. Books should be ready to pick up at this time as well.
RAPID READERS & WRITERS BOOK CLUB
Grades 3 – 5. Join us on Tuesday, September 24 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm as we discuss books, play games, try out a bit of creative writing, and enjoy a light snack. LOOK WHO'S READING BOOK CLUB
Grade K on Tuesday, September 24 from 6:00 - 6:30 pm. The group will engage in a variety of fun learning activities featuring phonics, the writing of letters and words, and many other skills that promote a strong literacy foundation. Registration is required and will be available the end of August. Books will be available to pick up the beginning of September.
1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
In August 2014, the Mary L. Cook Public Library launched a new literacy program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. We have 31 readers who have completed the goal of 1000 books!
If you read your child one book a day, she/he will reach 1000 books in under three years. Though the goal of this program is to improve literacy skills, but even more, it’s about time spent together reading. Stop in today and ask us how to register your child for this program.

***Book Collections
Teachers may request that a book collection be chosen for their students’ use. Call or email with all the details of your request. We will put your collection together and you simply stop in and pick it up. (Give us 3 days to put this together).
***Library and Classroom Visits
Teachers and their students are welcome to visit the library or we will visit your students in the classroom. Stop in today and sign up for a teacher card.

ADULT BOOK CLUB
The adult book club will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 1 pm. The book for Aug. 13 is The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote by Elaine Weiss. The book for Aug. 27 is The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen.
FUNDRAISER FOR TORNADO VICTIMS
Here's a chance to help our tornado victims in the greater Dayton area: Debbie Agnew of Oak Blossom Designs will be demonstrating how to make a wreath on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 6 pm at the library. You are welcome to come and watch a wreath being made, plus there will be raffle tickets available to buy at $5 each or 4 for $20, with the proceeds going to help the tornado victims.
CARRIAGE HILL RESIDENTS

ADULT CRAFT
Ages 16 & up may sign up to make an alcohol ink tile beginning Monday, July 29 for a class held Friday, August 16 at 6:30 pm. There is no experience necessary and the class is free.
UKULELE CLASS PART 2 - THE HOLIDAY EDITION
For those who can’t get enough of playing their ukuleles, let’s do another class! Even though this is the second ukulele class, it is still for beginners. If you want to try your hand at learning the ukulele, please come. Newbies are encouraged. If you were in the first ukulele class, come and strum and help the new students, then sing along to holiday music in order to improve your ukulele skills. The first two classes in September will be an intro to the ukulele: tuning, strumming, and how to read the music handouts. Then in October we will continue strumming and playing EASY holiday music. You DON’T need to know how to read music for this class! Sign up beginning August 5. Classes will be the first and third Wednesdays of each month from September through December from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. This class is free. The first class will be Wed., Sep. 4.
