May newsletter

Mary L. Cook Public Library Newsletter HOURS Library Pick-up Lockers and Book Drop are available 24/7 Monday through Thursday 9 am - 7 pm Friday 9 am - 5 pm Saturday 10 am - 2 pm CLOSED MEMORIAL DAY - MONDAY, MAY 25 WHAT'S NEW Recommended New Releases: 5/4: 26 Beauties -J. Patterson SFPD’s Sergeant Lindsay Boxer's best friend, Claire Washburn, is named medical examiner of the year. But an uninvited guest crashes the Women’s Murder Club's party: a concerned father seeking investigative reporter Cindy Thomas’s help in locating his missing daughter. And she’s not the only one. Lindsay’s been investigating the deaths of a Jane Doe washed up on a nearby beach, and a young woman found in Golden Gate Park. 5/5: The Calamity Club - K. Stockett Mississippi, 1944. Meg Lefleur is one of the unadoptable "big girls" at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum. Birdie Calhoun, unmarried and outspoken, has come to ask her socialite sister to help the struggling family she’s left behind. Charlie is a woman running low on luck with little left to lose. This is a big-hearted novel about a group of unbreakable women, fighting for what’s rightfully theirs - and the power of friendship to change everything.

Change of Plans - S. Dessen Finley has always felt most comfortable in someone else’s shadow. Fortunately, she’s got Colin, her magnetic boyfriend, who sweeps her along for activities, friendships, and future plans. Then she goes on a last-minute trip with her distant mom to a family vacation house that is being sold and that Finley didn’t know existed. A Founding Mother - S. Dray In time for the 250th Anniversary of the birth of the United States comes a sweeping, intimate portrayal of Abigail Adams - wife of one president and mother to another - whose wit, willpower, and wisdom helped shape the fledgling republic. A stunning historical novel with modern-day implications. John of John - D. Stuart Out of money and with little to show for his art school education, John-Calum Macleod takes the ferry back home to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides to find that little has changed except for him. He returns to the windswept croft and the two pillars of his childhood: his father John, a sheep farmer, tweed weaver, and lay preacher in the local Presbyterian church, and his maternal grandmother Ella, a profanity-loving Glaswegian whose steady warmth helped Cal weather the sudden departure of his mother. Mercy Hill - H Thurman A debut family novel about four sisters growing up on the campus of the underfunded state mental hospital where their strong-willed mother serves as head of psychiatry. A richly moving story of sisterhood, loyalty, and mental health in America. The Things We Never Say - E. Strout Artie Dam spends his days teaching history to eleventh graders, expanding young minds and lending a kind word to those who need it most. He makes small talk with neighbors and takes his sailboat out on Massachusetts Bay. Artie looks out at a world gone mad and turns a question over and over in his mind: How is it that we know so little about one another, even those closest to us? 5/12: June Baby - S. Garvey Both a heartfelt coming-of-age story and a tender exploration of love and grief, set against a backdrop of golden dunes and seaside sunsets, June Baby shows us what it might look like to embrace a life shaped not by loss, but by possibility.

The Last Mandarin - L. Penny An electrifying study of absolute power and voracious greed, political terror, and personal conviction. But it is also an intimate examination of choice, of sacrifice, of memory and myths, both cultural and personal. It is the story of a mother and daughter, as well as a compelling international thriller about the precarious balance of power across the world, and within a family... and what happens when both break down. 5/19: Canon - P. Lewis Two unlikely heroes embark on quests to win God’s favor in this outrageously entertaining, profoundly heartfelt novel that announces an ingenious new voice. Ironwood - M. Connelly Detective Sergeant Stilwell knows that his posting on Catalina Island is no paradise, but to most residents, it seems blissfully separated - by twenty-two miles of ocean - from the troubles of Los Angeles County. But now a threat is coming to his safe haven. The Shippers - K. Center Shipboard antics abound in this witty, heart-tugging, childhood-friends-to-lovers romance, as JoJo and Cooper team up, fake flirt, slow dance, share a cabin, sing duets, get jealous, answer long-held questions, and finally, at last, discover truths about each other that will change everything. 5/26: Babylon, South Dakota - T. Lin A tantalizing, American West saga about a Chinese American family trying to survive on their Dakota farm as a powerful, mysterious, and morally dubious military secret shapes their lives. The Divorce - F. McFadden A razor-sharp, subversive thriller where love curdles into vengeance. Naomi fixates on her husband's new girlfriend. What begins as cynical curiosity soon twists into obsession, and then into something far darker. As Naomi uncovers secrets she never imagined, she realizes her own life may be in danger.

The Midnight Train - M. Haig No one can change the past, but the Midnight Train can take you there. The chance to relive the moments that meant most. To see what kind of person you really were. Wilbur wishes he could go back and live differently. But to do so risks everything. Our Patrons Liked: The Frozen River - A. Lawhon A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. Skylark - P. McLain The author weaves a mesmerizing tale of Paris above and below - where a woman’s quest for artistic freedom in 1664 intertwines with a doctor’s dangerous mission during the German occupation in the 1940s, revealing a story of courage and resistance that transcends time. When We Had Wings - A. Lawhon From three bestselling authors comes an interwoven tale about a trio of World War II nurses stationed in the South Pacific who wage their own battle for freedom and survival.
