Can’t make heads or tails of the new health care insurance enrollments?  Our library is hosting a navigator, a person trained to assist you in enrolling for the Affordable Care Act health care, on Monday, Jan. 6.  You may drop in from 2-5 pm or 6-8 pm – no appointments necessary. A brief presentation will be followed by a question and answer period.  You then may speak individually to the navigator about enrolling.  Don’t miss this opportunity to meet with someone while they are in our community.

Pam Campbell’s watercolor class will resume on Monday morning, Jan. 6 from 9 am to noon.  Register at the front desk. Participants will purchase their own supplies from a list provided by the instructor.

Oil painting class lasting six weeks will restart on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 10 am to 1 pm.  The $75 fee covers the cost of your supplies. On the first Tuesday, students are to bring in items to use in a photo shoot they compose.  For more information, contact instructor Justine Vraniak at 513-604-3124 or justinev1@hotmail.com.

Adult Book Club will discuss Fool’s Puzzle by Earlene Fowler on Tuesday, Jan. 7.  The Good Dream by Donna Van Liere is available at the front desk for the Jan. 21 meeting.

Do you have a new year’s resolution to find out more about your family tree this year?  Come to Rootfinders on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 am and get tips on how it’s done!

If you’ve had questions needling you about acupuncture, please come to the library on Tuesday, Jan. 14.  A representative from Byers Chiropractic will be here for an informational meeting at 6 pm.

The Waynesville Underground Railroad Committee meets the third Monday of the month, Jan. 20, at 11 am.

The Friends of the Mary L. Cook Public Library cordially invite you to attend a meeting to see how you can support our library on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 6 pm.

Calling all ladies ready for a fun night out on a winter’s eve!  We will be showing Red 2 on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 pm.  The all-star cast includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary-Louise Parker.

On Monday, Jan. 27 at 6:30 pm, Nolan Matthews, Chief Deputy Auditor for Warren County, will be here to discuss how to avoid overpaying on your real estate taxes and answer any questions you might have.

Do you wish you had a way to check your electric appliance consumption?  Now you do!  DP&L is supplying us with “Kill-a-Watt” devices - check one out from our library to take home and measure your electrical usage.  It’s a great way to find out where your energy dollars are going.

Creating Passwords

So now that you have a cool new electronic device for Christmas, do yourself a favor and create a stronger password.

A good password is long and unique to each account and isn’t easily guessed. Yes, people still use “123456789” and “password”. These accounts are very easily accessed, since they’re in the dictionaries that hackers use to try to get into accounts.

Adobe recently fell victim to hackers, with 130 million passwords of active and inactive users stolen. That includes everyone who has used Adobe Digital Editions to access library ebooks, by the way. You can read more about it and see the top 20 most common passwords people used for their Adobe accounts.

If you used the same password for your Adobe account and your email account, that’s extra bad news. That hacker could access your email, since your email address may have been stolen along with the password. With access to your email account, they can reset passwords for high-value websites like banks, which often validate password changes through email. Scary, right?

Protect yourself better by creating a password around 20 characters long, and choose multiple, unrelated words. Even better, create a combination of words, numbers and special characters. You can even use your own pattern like this one: special character, word, numbers, special character, word. Like this: %shatters61103+Zinc, which, because it’s odd, is actually fairly easy to remember.

Next, use software like LastPass or 1Password to securely store your passwords and generate new, strong passwords for you automatically. With them, you just need one strong password to get you into the software, and they store the rest. From shopping sites to email logins to your library card, you can store over 400 passwords in 1Password.

Teens in Grades 7 and up (or the equivalent) can become an important part of “The Teen Scene” at the Mary L. Cook Public Library!  They can become members of TAB - the Teen Advisory Board.  These teens assist with materials selection, programming plans, and other activities at the Library.

Applications are now available at the Library as well as at the Waynesville Middle School and High School libraries.  Stop in and pick one up before January 31st.

The Board and Staff of the Library believe that teens are important!  They believe that teens should be allowed to share their opinions and ideas.  Teens know what teens like to do!  We are counting on our teens to make the “Teen Scene” the best at The Mary L. The Friends Annual Holiday Auction

The Friends of the Mary L. Cook Public Library Holiday Auction was an enormous success!  This fundraiser has grown to be more than just wreaths to be auctioned; this year we had gift baskets, quilts, desks, candles, and even an OSU football print!  The silent auction brought bidders coming from all over the area to view and bid on these holiday decorations.   We would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations ;The Abernathy Family, Becky & John Barney, The Beatty Family, Bella at Home, Byers Chiropractic, Pam Campbell, Canada Goose Gallery,  Dawn Dale & Waynesville Quilters, Field’s Family Enterprises, Forner Wood Shop, Framing Place & Art Gallery, Grandma’s Gardens, Gloria Gaylor, Gravel Hill Gifts, Haberdashery, Hartsock’s Village Florist, Hometown Market Place, Hour House, Vicki Huston, Susan Keller-Peterson,  Lebanon Citizens National Bank, Helen LeMay, Little Red Shed, Jen Martin, Linda Morgan, The Peddler House, Daphne Philpott, Roberta Smith, The Stonehouse Tavern,  Linda & Tom Swartzel, Shelley Trapp, Village Family Restaurant, Waynesville Area Chamber of Commerce, Waynesville Lumber, and Kathleen Welch. Thank you for all your support!

We would also like to say thanks to Shelly Beatty for all her efforts in soliciting the donations for our auction.  Shelly has coordinated this auction for several years now and we feel it is so successful due to her efforts.

Please join the Friends on January 22, 2014 @ 6 pm.  We will discuss ways we can support The Mary L. Cook Public Library.
